ANTIBIOTIC RESIDUE TESTS

Delvotest®: On Farm Antibiotic Testing
.

The importance of testing for antibiotics on farm prior to the collection of the bulk tank is well known. Antibiotics used on dairy farms carry the risk of contaminating milk and milk products. Prevention of antibiotic residues in milk has a significant financial benefit and is therefore a key concern for all farmers.

The Delvotest® On-Farm antibiotic testing system is used throughout the world for the detection of inhibitory substances in milk and for checking milk for milk payment purposes. In New Zealand, the Delvotest® On-Farm antibiotic testing system equates with the DSM Micro-plate antibiotic testing system used by SAITL.

Delvotest On-Farm Antibiotic Testing is the gold standard in milk testing for antibiotics and was the first antibiotic residue test on the market, some 40 years ago. Delvotest On-Farm Antibiotic Testing is a broad spectrum test and as such detects different types of antibiotics in one single test. There are about 7 principle antibiotic groups, including Penicillins (Beta-Lactams), Sulphonamides and Tetracyclines. The majority of other rapid tests on the market only detect one of these groups, the Beta Lactams.Other Rapid Tests are available for related groups of antibiotics but require more than one test per milk sample to cover the range of antibiotics. Dairies and milk payment laboratories screen the full range using the Delvotest broad spectrum test. The use of rapid tests other than Delvotest On-Farm Antibiotic Testing can therefore give a false sense of security to the farmer.

Method

The method for conducting this test could not be simpler. A sample of milk from a preset syringe is deposited in a small test tube with a purple colour nutrient agar solution in it. This agar contains spores of Geobacillus stearothermophilus, a bacterium sensitive for all kinds of antibiotics. The test is then incubated for up to 3 hrs in a special incubator that comes with the kit. If a colour change occurs from purple to yellow the test is negative; if it stays purple it is positive and means the milk sample contains one or more antibiotics.

The effective working time required by Delvotest is only 3-5 minutes.

For your convenience it is possible (with the incubator) to preset the timer to switch off automatically, thus giving you flexibility in choosing the time you read the results.
